Support for businesses from the UK Government

The UK Government are continuing to support business energy bills.

The Energy Bills Discount Scheme has now been approved. To apply for further support visit the Government website.

Energy Bills Discount Scheme

  • 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024
  • This scheme provides eligible customers with a discount against the wholesale part of their unit rate
  • Energy and Trade Intensive Industries and Heat Networks will receive a higher level of support

Energy Bills Discount Scheme

How does the discount work?

  • If you're eligible and the wholesale price on the day you agreed your contract is above the Government price threshold, you'll receive a discount.
  • We'll apply a discount until you reach the Maximum Discount or your wholesale price meets the Government price threshold, whichever happens first.
The Government price threshold:
  • Electricity: 30.2p p/kWh
  • Gas: 10.7p p/kWh
The Maximum Discount:
  • Electricity: 1.961p p/kWh
  • Gas: 0.697p p/kWh

The wholesale price is currently lower than the Government price threshold, meaning most customers won’t see a discount under the new scheme. However, if the wholesale price increases above the Government price threshold, a discount will be applied to eligible customers bills.

You can find the wholesale price on the day you agreed your contract by visiting the Government website.

Who is eligible?

The scheme will be available to non-domestic energy customers that are:​

  • On fixed price contracts that were agreed on or after 1st December 2021
  • Signing up to new fixed-price contracts
  • On deemed / out of contract or variable tariffs
  • On flexible purchase or similar contracts

Be wary of scammers during this period. If you get a message, email or phone calls asking for your bank details, this could be fraudulent. You should report messages you think are suspicious.

Further support for Energy and Trade Intensive Industries and Heat Networks

As part of the scheme Energy and Trade Intensive Industries and Heat Networks can apply to receive a higher level of support.

Eligible businesses will have 90 days from the date they become eligible to apply. For most customers this is 90 days from when the application portal opens. However, some customers who become eligible later will still be able to apply.

To apply you’ll need to provide:

  • Information about your business (such as SIC codes, registration number, business name as it appears on your bill and address)
  • Information about your energy supply (your energy suppliers name and your account number)
  • Meter point numbers (MPRN or MPAN) associated with the property (you can find this on your bill) for more help see the FAQ’s section

We won’t be able to apply the higher level of support to your bills until your eligibility has been confirmed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ). If your application is successful we’ll backdate the support to 1 April 2023.

Additional support for Energy and Trade Intensive Industries

Businesses who operate primarily in these sectors have been recognised as Energy and Trade Intensive Industries by the UK Government. If this describes your business, you’re encouraged to apply for further support.

How does it work?

If your application is successful, we’ll apply the additional support to 70% of your energy use, subject to a maximum discount. The Energy Bills Discount Scheme will then be applied to the remaining 30% of your energy use, if your wholesale price is above the Government price threshold

Higher level of support:
  • Electricity: 18.5p p/kWh
  • Gas: 9.9p p/kWh
Maximum Discount:
  • Electricity: 8.9p p/kWh
  • Gas: 4.0p p/kWh

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the higher level support you’ll need to prove that:

  • 50% or more of your business's revenue is being generated from UK-based activity within one of the eligible sectors.
  • You’re a Local Authority and declare that at least 50% of the space is taken up by operations within an eligible sector.

Energy and Trade Intensive industries FAQ’s

Additional support for Heat Networks

Heat networks supply heating and hot water to domestic end users. Support under this scheme aims to protect users who have not been supported by the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG). This means Heat Networks are required by law to pass on the discount to their domestic end users.

How does it work?

If your unit rate is above the Minimum Supply Price, you'll receive a discount. We'll apply the full published discount, provided it doesn’t take your unit rate below the Minimum Supply Price. If it does, your discount will be capped so that your unit rate doesn’t go below the Minimum Supply Price. In some cases, after applying the full published discount your unit rate will still be above the Minimum Supply Price.

The Minimum Supply Price:

  • Electricity: 34p p/kWh
  • Gas: 7.8p p/kWh

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for support as a Heat Network you need to:

  • Meet the definition of a Heat Network Operator
  • Be supplied gas or electricity by a licensed supplier for the purposes of generating heat
  • Serve one or more domestic end consumers

Alternative Fuel Payment

A one off payment due by 10 March 2023

The non-domestic Alternative Fuel Payment is a one off payment of £150 for customers who aren’t on the gas grid and use an alternative fuel for heating purposes.

The Government have identified eligible customers therefore you don’t need to apply for this payment.

We will automatically add the payment to eligible accounts that were on supply with us on 8 January 2023. If you have multiple sites with us that are eligible, you’ll receive one payment per unique address.

If we’re unable to apply the payment to your bill, we’ll write to you separately to let you know how we will be sending the payment.

Are you eligible?

You must have:

  • A registered non-domestic live electricity meter at your site
  • Been on supply with us on 8 January 2023
  • Positive electricity use – this means your business site does not feed energy back to the grid.

Energy Bill Relief Scheme

Under this scheme, eligible non-domestic customers will receive a discount to wholesale gas and electricity prices.

To calculate your discount, the wholesale portion of the unit price during this period will be compared to a baseline 'government price threshold’

Qualifying Financially Disadvantaged Customer Discount

11 November 2022 – 31 March 2023

This discount supports some customers who are not protected by a Fixed Price Plan or Fixed Term Flex Contract. We’ll apply the Qualifying Financially Disadvantaged Customer Discount to eligible customers bills automatically.

This discount is in addition to the Energy Bill Relief Scheme discount, which will be listed on your bill separately. We’ll apply the Energy Bill Relief Scheme discount after the Qualifying Financially Disadvantaged Customer Discount. This means your Energy Bill Relief Scheme discount may reduce but the overall discount you'll receive will not reduce.

Are you eligible?

The Government criteria for receiving the discount is that you are not supplied under a Fixed Term Contract and that you’ve paid all your bills within the last 28 days.

If you agree a new Fixed Price Plan or Fixed Term Flex Contract, you will not be eligible for the Qualifying Financially Disadvantaged Customer discount.
